The Cons Of Re-Skins
So let's take a minute to discuss what sucks about re-skinning a game. This is when you take a game and keep the mechanics, but swap out the art and theme. It primarily affects visual treatments and backstory.
1) The doubt...
How do you know if the second theme is any better? Or a third one? A fourth? HOW DO YOU STOP THE MADNESS?!!! Well, at some point, you just need to have faith that you've asked enough people, that they've been honest, and that you've made the right call.
2) The potentially wasted art...
If you're like me, it's easy to get caught up in new ideas. First, because it's fast to slap those first blobs of paint on a blank canvas without worrying about messing anything up. Second, because no one's gonna tell you you're wrong. Yet. And, according to the sage words of my good friend, Martin, I latch onto an idea like a tick; which can produce a lot of art we never end up using if no one keeps me in check and we then change directions. I should take a moment to point out that, despite his conscious observation of this phenomenon, Martin loves seeing this play out and has even been known to encourage it. Bastard.
All things being equal, however, it does have it's upsides, too. But before we get into those, let's chat!
